Exchange students at TUNI: Do a study project on Radio Moreeni and earn ECTS.

Already over 20 years Radio Moreeni has been an essential part of Tampere, as naturally as the Pispala Ridge or the Näsinneula Tower are.

Moreeni is a part of the local cultural life, the university and the everyday life of the people who populate the city of Tampere.

Radio Moreeni Staff and Contributors

Marko Ala-Fossi is the editor-in-chief of Radio Moreeni and the instructor in broadcast journalism at the University of Tampere.

University teacher Eve Sulonen is responsible for programme scheduling and making sure that all programmes are aired in their respective places and on time. She is the person to turn to in all practical matters concerning Radio Moreeni.

Myy Ojanpää is the sound designer at Radio Moreeni. She is responsible for maintaining the equipment and teaching the staff the secrets of recording and editing.

Radio Moreeni – Part of the University

Moreeni is a part of the Tampere University and the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC).

The funding of the station comes from the university.

Moreeni is suitable for many educational purposes. Translation students, for instance, edit and read news on Radio Moreeni in Russian and German. Also lecture series and radio columns have been produced.

Signal Reception

Radio Moreeni is a local radio station. Our terrestrial frequency is 98.4 MHz, on cable 101.5 MHz. We serve approximately 300.000 potential listeners in Tampere and its surrouding region.

Our transmitter is located on top of the Näsinneula Tower, at a height of 140 metres, or 240 metres from sea level. Our signal can be received within a radius of approximately 50 kilometres.

The History of Radio Moreeni

Radio Moreeni is currently the only university-owned radio station in Finland.

Moreeni was born in late 1989 under the name Yliopistoradio (University Radio). The first editor-in-chief and the person who set the guidelines for the station was Seppo Huiku. He wanted Moreeni to be a station for everyone in Tampere, as well as the university. Even then, Moreeni wanted to break down boundaries – to bring the university closer to its surroundings.

Seppo Huiku moved on to pastures new in Spring 1994. His duties were handled by Olli Ylönen until the Autumn of the same year, when Liisa Riekki assumed the helm at the station. She further increased Moreeni’s ties to local cultural life and organisations. Ritva Alpola then stood in for her and worked later as a regular staff editor at Radio Moreeni.

In Autumn 1998 Jari-Pekka Vuorela was chosen as the editor-in-chief. His extensive knowledge of jazz meant that several new music shows were added to the programme schedule.

Maarit Virkkula entered the post of editor-in-chief in Autumn 2001. Her association with Radio Moreeni began during her years as a student at the University of Tampere.

Mervi Leino worked as the managing editor four years, from August 2004 to June 2008.

After her, Eveliina Niskanen worked as the managing editor till June 2012, when Päivi Harkko started working in the same post.

In September 2017 Eveliina Niskanen alias Eve Sulonen returned to the station. In the beginning of 2022, her job description changed from Managing editor to University teacher in radio and audio journalism.
